Following the shocking news of an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, world leaders have rushed to condemn this act of violence.
Additionally, political leaders within the US, such as Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi (whose family were also victims of a politically-motivated violent attack) have condemned the assassination attempt.
“A Warning”: Condemnation From Italian Prime Minister
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded by saying, “In political debate …there are limits that should never be crossed. It is a warning to everyone, regardless of political affiliation, to restore dignity and honour to politics, against all forms of hatred and violence, and for the good of our democracies.”
On social media, she added, “Solidarity with Donald #Trump, his supporters and the injured, and my heartfelt condolences for the victim and his family.”
Canadian Prime Minister is “Sickened”
Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister who joined Donald Trump on the world stage countless times during Trump’s Presidency was quick to condemn the attack.
He said, “I’m sickened by the shooting at former President Trump. It cannot be overstated — political violence is never acceptable. My thoughts are with former President Trump, those at the event, and all Americans.”
Macron Calls Attack “A Tragedy”
French President Emmanuel Macron said, “My thoughts are with President Donald Trump, the victim of an assassination attempt. I send him my wishes for a speedy recovery.”
Macron added, “A spectator has died, several are injured. It is a tragedy for our democracies. France shares the shock and indignation of the American people.”
Condemnation in Asia
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, commenting, “Violence has no place in politics and democracies. Wish him speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, those injured and the American people.”
Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said, “We must stand firm against any form of violence that challenges democracy. I pray for former President Trump’s speedy recovery.”
Putin Points Fingers
Russian President Vladimir Putin has long been accused of favoring Donald Trump over his Democratic opponents and of trying to help the former Apprentice host win presidential victories.
Now, Reuters report that, “The Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that while Russia did not believe the current U.S. administration was responsible for the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, it had created an atmosphere that provoked the attack.”
Brazilian Response: “See You At The Inauguration”
The current President of Brazil, Lula Da Silva, responded to the assassination attempt by saying, “The attack against former President Donald Trump must be vehemently repudiated by all defenders of democracy and dialogue in politics. What we saw today is unacceptable.”
However, former right-wing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro took a different tone. On Twitter/X, he posted to Trump, “See you at the inauguration.”
Response From South America
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro responded to Trump’s shooting, “We have been adversaries, but I wish President Trump healthy and long life.”
Meanwhile, Ecuador President Daniel Noboa said, “What has happened today in the United States is unacceptable. My solidarity is with Donald Trump and his family at this time.”
Argentina’s Javier Milei Hits Out At Left-Wing
Argentina’s populist leader Javier Milei criticized the left in response to the attack against Trump.
He commented, “The desperation of the international left is not surprising, as today it sees its harmful ideology expire, and is willing to destabilize democracies and promote violence to screw itself into power. In fear of losing at the polls, they resort to terrorism to impose their retrograde and authoritarian agenda.”
EU & NATO Respond
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, “I wish [Trump] a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with those affected. I condemn this attack. Political violence has no place in our democracies. NATO Allies stand together to defend our freedom & values.”
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen expressed shock at the attack, wished Trump a quick recovery and added that “political violence has no place in a democracy.”
