The Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee began it’s second day on Tuesday after a busy Monday that saw an array of high-profile right-wingers address crowds.
On Monday, Trump and his running mate JD Vance were formally nominated, and the 45th President was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd as he joined the audience. Keep reading for a recap of night one, a list of planned speakers for night two, and details for when Trump will speak.
Who Spoke on Night One?
The highest-ranking Republican in America at the moment, Speaker Mike Johnson, addressed audiences on Monday – although he suffered a teleprompter malfunction towards the end of his speech.
Meanwhile, a number of other elected Republicans made speeches, including Senators Katie Britt and Tim Scott, and Representatives John James and Wesley Hunt.
Not Just Elected Officials Speaking
Party conventions usually feature a mixture of elected officials and high-profile celebrities and individuals. So far, this year’s RNC has been no different.
Among the speaker’s on Monday night were David Sacks, the investor and former CEO of Yammer, internet personality Amber Rose, and Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
What Was Said on Monday?
Despite promises that this year’s RNC would focus on unity, Senator Ron Johnson gave a fiery speech where he accused Democrats of representing a “clear and present danger” to America.
He claimed that Democrats had been captured by a “fringe agenda includes biological males competing against girls and the sexualization and indoctrination of our children.” He later said the wrong speech had been loaded into the teleprompter and that he hadn’t intended to make many of the controversial claims he did.
Trump Rivals To Speak
Among the speakers tonight are some of Trump’s primary rivals – including Nikki Haley, who was Trump’s most formidable opponent in the 2024 primary contest.
Additionally, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will speak. All three have endorsed Trump since dropping out of the Presidential contest.
Trump Opponents of Old To Speak
It’s not just Trump’s 2024 primary rivals who will address Republicans tonight. Two of Trump’s 2016 primary rivals will speak – including Florida Senator Marco Rubio.
The crowd will also be addressed by Senator Ted Cruz, the Texas politician who offered sharp criticism of Trump eight years ago but has since become a staunch ally of the former President.
Senate Candidates To Speak
A number of Senate hopefuls will speak on Tuesday, hoping to use the RNC to boost their profile, as they hope to gain ground against their Democratic opponents.
Among the Senate candidates speaking are Arizona’s Kari Lake, Ohio’s Bernie Moreno, Pennsylvania’s Dave McCormick, and Nevada’s Sam Brown.
High Profile Representatives To Speak
A number of high-profile Republican representatives will speak on Tuesday, including Hose Majority Leader Steve Scalise and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik.
Additionally, the crowd will be addressed by Jeff Van Drew – the New Jersey congressman who was elected as a Democrat in 2018 as part of the ‘blue wave’, but went on to switch parties.
More Trump Allies To Speak
A number of loyal Trump supporters will address supporters tonight, including RNC Chair Lara Trump – who is also the wife of Trump’s third child, Eric Trump.
Additional speakers include Reince Priebus – who was Trump’s White House chief of staff – and Ben Carson – who was Trump’s Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
When Will Trump Speak?
Following an assassination attempt against his life, Trump arrived in Wisconsin on Sunday and was greeted with rapturous applause by audience members on Monday.
Trump is scheduled to address the RNC on Thursday, and is expected to emphasize themes of unity during his address.
