Favorite Foods of the British Monarchs
Members of British royalty have a selection of world-renowned chefs to cook for them whatever they please.
Yet, many choose to eat the same foods day after day simply because they love them so much. Join us as we explore the favorite foods of members of the British royal family.
The Pickiest Queen in Britain’s History
Having lived to be an impressive 96-year-old, Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed many meals in her lifetime. However, according to former royal chef Darren McGrady, the queen was not a foodie.
However, when speaking with Hello Magazine, the chef revealed she loved anything chocolate. “She is absolutely a chocoholic. Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on, she would choose, especially chocolate perfection pie,” he said.
Queen Elizabeth Loved a Good Steak
During his time as a chef at Buckingham Palace, McGrady said the queen was a reasonably simple eater who enjoyed fresh game.
“For a main course, she loved game, things like Gaelic steak, fillet steak with a mushroom whiskey sauce, especially if we did it with venison,” he said.
Prince Philip Was Fond of Salmon Coulibiac
While Queen Elizabeth was no foodie, according to McGrady, her husband Prince Philip was. Speaking in a separate interview with Delish, the former royal chef revealed that above all else Philip loved a good salmon coulibiac.
The dish consists of fresh salmon combined with cooked vegetables, which are placed inside puff pastry.
King Charles Loves His Plums
Britain’s new king, Charles III, eats the same thing every morning for breakfast: a few plums and some juice. The fruit is sourced from his own garden at Highgrove.
According to McGrady, via People, “The instruction was to put two plums and a little juice into the bowl and send it in to him for breakfast.”
Only Organic for the New King
When it comes to the shopping list for King Charles III, he won’t have anything that isn’t organic, according to Darren McGrady (via Delish).
For dinner, the former royal chef says that the new king’s favorite meal is seared lamb with wild mushroom risotto. And the mushrooms had best be organic, or the monarch will send it back.
Queen Consort Loves Her Fish and Chips
Fish and chips is a true British classic, and it only makes sense that Queen Consort Camilla argues this is her favorite kind of food.
Speaking in an interview with her son, Tom Parker, for You Magazine, Camilla said, “That smell,” she said (via Express). “You cannot beat proper fish and chips.”
Prince of Wales Adores His Sushi
Despite a rule prohibiting the royals from eating raw shellfish due to the risk of illness, Prince William loves to eat sushi.
While attending an event held at Japan House on Kensington High Street back in 2018, the royal said, “My wife and I love sushi” (via The Independent). He continued, “We might have to come down here for lunch when there’s no one else down.”
Kate Middleton’s Obsession with Indian Curry
The Princess of Wales, Catherine, is known for eating a well-balanced and healthy diet full of veggies.
According to the Mirror, Kate said she “loves curries and spice,” and if she had to choose her favorite takeout, it would ultimately be Indian food.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Share a Favorite
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle get along like a house on fire, and the pair, who married in 2018, even have the same favorite meal: roast chicken.
According to former royal chef McGrady, Harry and William loved “traditional, English food,” and it doesn’t get any more British than a good roast chicken.
The Young Princes Loved ‘Anything with Banana’
When William and Harry were young princes, they ate like normal children, said McGrady during an interview with Hello Magazine.
“They liked comfort food dishes. They loved banana flan, anything with banana, really, banana ice cream. They loved things like mixed grills, burgers, pizza, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken and cream chicken sauce,” he said.
