The royals have — and likely will continue to — influence fashion trends around the globe. Princess Kate is known for her matching, tailored pantsuits and dresses, while Princess Mary of Denmark has made headlines for her eye-[popping outfits. In short, there is no “wrong” way to dress a royal. They’re sure to make an impact no matter what they’re wearing.

The one fashion item they all avoid, however?

High heels. Here’s why.

While the royals have been photographed in high heels, pumps, and espadrilles, many (including Princess Kate and Queen Letizia) have moved away from the look — opting instead to choose shoes that are both practical and classy: Pumps.

While many might see flats as a relic of the 90s, the royals enjoy their stylish and sophisticated look. They can be matched with anything, they don’t pose any health or safety risks, and they “work” as a work shoe.

Both the ballet flat and the loafer have been popping up in all of the most popular fashion magazines, which may be due in part to the resurgence of 90s trends. Additionally, they may have been informed by the royals and their pervasive fashion choices, trickling down into daily fashion and wear.

Memorable Moments: The Flat In Royal Fashion History
The flat has made such a mark on modern-day society that the Daily Mail has compiled a list of all of the memorable moments that have been captured — flats on feet. We’ve summarized a few of them below:

Queen Letizia of Spain’s Royal Outing
Queen Letizia is always the perfect picture of elegance and grace. She made fashion headlines when she paired her sparkly flats with a & Other Stories slip-style dress when attending the Atlantida Mallorca Film Festival in 2022.

Queen Mary of Denmark’s Jutland Appearance
The queen of Denmark was spotted sporting a luxurious pair of Chanel espadrille sandals, setting a flash-fashion trend in June of 2020 at Naturkraft. She paired the black-and-tan slip-ons with a vibrant blue Ba&Sh blue shirt and slim-leg trousers. Many attribute her to bringing back Parisian chic in 2022, as she remained consistent with her use of the slingback style flats year-round.

Princess Catherine’s Famed Court Shoes to Flats Swap
The Princess of Wales is famed for her use of court shoes. However, recently, she has swapped to flats. Perhaps she decided these were more practical for her line of work, as she has been hosting an increased amount of public appearances each year.

Her go-to? Black Boden-brand suede flats that compliment virtually any outfit. She keeps it classic more often than not, typically opting for black or monochromatic shoe choices that compliment her choice of outfit. In the summer, the princess will still typically reach for her flats, swapping for a pair of espadrilles when the situation requires it.
