Queen Letizia of Spain became the victim of a slight wardrobe malfunction while welcoming guests to the palace at the end of January. The unfortunate situation occurred during a planned meeting in which the king of Spain, Felipe, alongside his wife, welcomed diplomats from around the world to Zarzuela Palace in the city of Madrid.
A video caught the short moment of panic and was later shared online. It begins with the queen, who’s dressed in an elegant navy floor-length dress pictured beside King Felipe as they welcome the diplomatic attendees to the palace.
As the queen began shaking the hands of guests and ambassadors, a diamond bracelet she’d been wearing on one wrist loosened and fell onto the floor in front of her. Letizia, trying not to cause any kind of scene, immediately bent down and retrieved it from the ground.
The awkward malfunction was over in less than a minute. The queen showed off her humble nature by kneeling down herself to retrieve the bracelet before swiftly returning to greet guests. A few moments later, she was pictured, along with the aid of King Felipe, carefully piecing the bracelet back together. After a final inspection by the king, it was back to business for the Spanish royals.
On the day, the queen accompanied the stunning bracelet with several other luxurious pieces of jewelry.
She wore a sapphire and silver set, which included a necklace and precious earrings. The necklace was a gift to the queen from Felipe’s parents, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, who gave it to Letizia over two decades ago.
The 51-year-old queen is often considered a style icon. This was evident during the diplomatic meeting as she paired her carefully chosen jewelry with the exquisite blue dress accompanied by nude leather pumps by Magrit.
Just a month ago, she was complimented online for her choice of outfit during a meeting with the Spanish Association Against Cancer. On the day, she rocked a “Manet Austrian Jacket” by Frambua.
Despite the diplomatic meeting taking place once a year at the Spanish palace, there appears to be some form of drama at each event.
Last year, headlines spread like wildfire after an Iranian diplomat refused to shake Letizia’s hand. Yet, it turned out this was all a misunderstanding. It was later revealed that the Iranian ambassador had simply followed his cultural customs. He may only touch the hand of a female if it’s extended out toward him. Even then, according to Iranian customs, he has the right to refuse if he so chooses.
The slight wardrobe malfunction comes at the end of a busy week for the Spanish queen. A few days prior, Letizia had attended an event at the National Disability Awards, where she was received by Ana de la Cueva, the National Heritage Administration’s president.
This just goes to show that royals aren’t immune to the occasional mishap.
