In recent weeks, hospitalizations and deaths owing to deli meat contaminated with listeria have prompted concern from consumers and regulators alike.
Linked to Boar’s Head deli meats, the company’s deli meat has now claimed another life – pushing the death toll up to three, and the number of non-fatal illnesses many times higher.
Where Have People Fallen Ill?
As of August 8th, 43 people had been hospitalized across 13 states, with the age of patients ranging from 32 to 94.
However, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that the number of people who have fallen victim to the outbreak is likely higher than official numbers show.
Millions of Products Recalled
Boar’s Head has recalled more than 7 million pounds of products after being linked to the deli meat listeria outbreak.
The recalled meats have a shelf-life of 44 days and were produced as recently as July 17th.
Risk Isn’t Over
The CDC is concerned that people may still have some of the recalled meats in their home, as some of the products are still within their shelf life.
For concerned consumers, a full list of the recalled products can be found here.
How To Prevent The Listeria Risk
While refrigeration and freezing does not kill off listeria bacteria, heating meats to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit does.
Listeria infection can mimic other illnesses, and therefore specific testing is required to diagnose it. Anyone who has become ill after consuming the recalled deli meat should immediately seek medical attention.
CDC Speak Out
The CDC said, “The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses.”
The CDC added, “This is because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for Listeria. In addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.”
Identifying Infected Meat
It can be hard to identify meat contaminated with listeria as it may not look or smell spoiled.
Even those who have consumed Boar’s Head deli meats and feel fine should continue to monitor themselves for symptoms for the 70 days after consuming it.
Listeria Symptoms
Symptoms of listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, neck stiffness, persistent fever, muscle aches and severe headaches.
Pregnant women, the elderly, young children and the immunocompromised are at high risk from listeria, with the infection being potentially life-threatening for these groups.
The Ill Interviewed
Public health investigators have interviewed 34 of those who become ill with listeria as part of the recent outbreak.
32 of the 34 recalled eating deli meats shortly before becoming ill.
How To Stay Safe
Those buying deli meats should heat the products until steaming hot before consuming and they should maintain good hygiene – cleaning their hands and surfaces regularly.
Consumers who had the recalled meat in their possession should clean their fridges, containers and any surfaces that came into contact with the meat.
