Customers are abandoning shopping carts in store after shopping for hours due to a situation that could easily be avoided.
According to aggrieved customers, some of the shopping carts abandoned contained hundreds of dollars worth of items, and were left due to a single policy by a major supermarket chain.
Rise in Complaints
The issue is becoming increasingly common, reflected in the increased number of complaints reaching social media.
Complaints on X about the chain have prompted an apology from the supermarket chain involved.
Kroger Headache
Issues have been raised at multiple Kroger locations across America, largely related to a recent policy change in stores.
Kroger is a major US supermarket and department store chain, with over 2700 supermarkets as of last year.
Empty Check-Outs
One of the complaints, detailed on X, was that the customer was unable to find a cashier.
Without a cashier available, customers at Kroger are expected to ring up their own groceries.
Issues With Self-Service
Directing shoppers to use self-service check-outs is not an issue in itself, but has caused a number of subsequent inconveniences for shoppers.
The first of these issues has been technical, with problems occurring with the machines themselves.
Mobile Scan and Don’t Go
One customer, writing on Facebook, told a story of their issue with the store’s Scan and Go system, which was not working at the till she was using.
Upon being directed to the next till by a staff member, she found her card had been charged for the previous customer’s shopping haul, rather than her own.
Rude Manager
The customer then faced trouble as they attempted to get a refund for the shopping she did not buy.
She continued: “The manager they called to get the full amount added back said it couldn’t be done and walked while I was talking to her!”
Money on the Aisle
The customer then promptly left, abandoning the shopping cart she claimed was worth around $350. However, she did have praise for the customer service representative.
“To the sweet lady at customer service who apologized for the poor treatment I received from management, you should be the manager!”
Night Scowls
Technical issues and lack of cashiers is a particular issue at night, due to the company’s new policy, per another customer on X.
The customer said that the policy of “‘no cashier available after 7pm-ish’ has been ongoing for over a year.”
Long Lines, Short Profits
The customer posted a photo of a long line of customers waiting to use the self-service machines as there were no cashiers available.
“I had to abandon my cart of $200 because there is not a single cashier anywhere,” they pointed out.
