A black bear was recently seen walking along a crowded California beach on a sunny beach day in California.
The powerful beast was witnessed by stunned onlookers enjoying a day out walking across the picturesque shoreline.
South Lake Tahoe
The bear was spotted on the beach of South Lake Tahoe, a small city on the southern shoreline of Lake Tahoe, near the Sierra Nevada mountains.
The city is a popular tourist spot in both summer and winter, due to its pleasant shorelines, but also relative close proximity to ski slopes.
Lake Tahoe
Black bears are not a totally uncommon sight in the Lake Tahoe basin as they often visit the area while foraging for food.
Even so, they are capable of harming humans, and it is necessary to take precautions when coming into contact with one of the beasts.
Sighting
Footage of the bear’s afternoon stroll was captured by visitor to the area, Kennedy Wilkins, conveniently a videographer.
He was standing on a pier, enjoying his holiday when the commotion alerted him to the bear moving along the sand.
Camera-Ready
The event on the shoreline prompted him to whip out his camera and begin taking footage of the remarkable event.
The footage captured shows the animal’s unusual behaviour, and captures some of the reactions of the large crowd of onlookers.
Obstacle Course
The beach was packed, not only with members of the public, but with pedalboats, foldable chairs, and a jet ski.
The bear can be seen carefully maneuvring its way around the obstacles, moving along the beach some distance from the crowd further inland.
Exit Left
The video ends with the bear disappearing under the pier, presumably returning to its base at higher climes.
At no point does the bear threaten to cause harm to any of the beachgoers, or even appear to react to them at all.
Bear Sighting Advice
Black bears are not especially aggressive towards humans, but there are several acctions you are advised to take if you come into contact with them.
According to advice from the National Park Service, eople should avoid eye contact, try not to make any sudden movements, and remain calm as they move slowly to a safer location.
Roaming Grounds
Black bears are the only species of bears that live in California, and they can be spotted in all kinds of habitats.
They are able to survive in cold and warm areas, and can be found foraging for food next to lakes or in gardens and mountains alike. They often seek out human habitations due to the food waste that humans leave lying out.
Savvy Beachgoers
The South Lake Tahoe visitors and residents that witnessed the bear are likely to have been aware of some of the more common bear encounter advice.
The crowd appeared relatively calm despite the excitement of the event, kept their distance, and did not make loud noises or move towards the lost animal.
